This December, families are invited to join a special Family Learning Workshop that celebrates the life and legacy of Albie Sachs — activist, writer, and former judge of South Africa’s Constitutional Court. Throughout his extraordinary life, Sachs has championed justice and freedom.
In the exhibition Spring is Rebellious: The Art & Life of Albie Sachs, currently on view at Zeitz MOCAA, visitors will find a replica of The Albie Award in the Preparing Ourselves for Freedom room. Named after Albie Sachs — who received a Lifetime Achievement in Pursuit of Justice award at the inaugural ceremony — the award honours his lifelong pursuit of justice. Created by George and Amal Clooney, The Albies recognise brave individuals and groups worldwide who, often at great personal risk, have devoted their lives to defending justice and human rights. These awards embody courage, integrity, and humanity — qualities that continue to inspire generations.
In this spirit, families will join Albie Sachs for an inspirational talk, followed by an artmaking workshop. Working with clay and symbolism, parents/guardians and children will create their own Awards of Appreciation — celebrating the qualities they value and admire most in one another. The morning will conclude with a joyful mini awards ceremony.
