Thokozile Virginia Mngoma was a member of the African National Congress from a very young age. and was banned for a year in 1953. The most successful protest she helped organize was the renowned Alexandra (Johannesburg) bus boycott of 1957, sparked off by an increase in bus fares. For three months people did not catch buses, they walked, or rode bicycles. The boycott worked. The fares did not go up.
