This image captures the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah, USA. In this environment, the landscape is truly otherworldly. With no vegetation in sight and red sand as far as the eye can see, it is no wonder that this site was selected as a testing ground for stimulating missions into outer space. With the nearest city over 300 miles away, its isolation also lends it an ethereal quality, as if it no longer belonged to planet Earth. At night, free from light pollution, this environment is one of the darkest places in the United States. The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye and the sky is saturated with stars.
