Gerald Machona‘s fictional flag consisting of five various decommissioned African currencies is reminiscent of the American flag planted on the moon as part of the USA Apollo 11 mission. This is fictional and is not representative of a particular country, rather, it has elements that are familiar but also alien. The artist’s act of transplanting and cross-pollinating various currencies into a single flag is an act of rupturing and of diversifying.
