Join us at the Zeitz MOCAA Centre for Art Education (CFAE) for a variety of exciting children’s workshops over the 2023 summer season from Monday, 18 to Thursday, 21 December.
All of the activities will be inspired by the silo structures of Zeitz MOCAA. Children will transform this simple cylinder into musical instruments, festive objects, and beautiful artworks.
Members’ children are invited to participate in the workshops free of charge.
Zeitz MOCAA Membership is R390 for 12 months.
For non-members, a single entry with your child is R250.00
Parents are requested to deliver your child/children to the Centre for Art Education where they will be registered for the workshops.
Please do not leave your child/children unaccompanied in the reception area.
Venues: Level -1 in the Centre for Art Education. You will be guided to the venue on the day.

Ages 6 – 8: | Mon 18 Dec: 10 am – 12 pm | Construction & Painted Surface Decoration | Kaleidoscope Fun The word ‘kaleidoscope’ comes from the Greek phrase that means ‘to view a beautiful form’. Art and science come together in this workshop where children will make a kaleidoscope using a simple cardboard tube to discover how light and mirrors create ever-changing beautiful forms and patterns. |
Tue 19 Dec: 10 am – 12 pm | Decorative Festive Crafts | Gnomes And Their ‘Silo’ Homes A workshop for children to make cosy and colourful gnomes and their homes, transforming the simple cardboard cylinder into storybook magic. | |
Wed 20 Dec: 10 am – 12 pm | Drawing, Construction & Decoration | Silo Sleighs And Songs This workshop invites children to make their own dog or reindeer sleigh from a simple cardboard tube, creating a special display for the family mantle piece or bedroom bookshelf. | |
Thu 21 Dec: 10 am – 12 pm | Decorative Crafts | Sensational Silo Shakers Children will make beautifully painted shakers with a variety of sounds and tones that they can use to accompany the festive music of the marimba players who will perform in the trackshed of the museum. | |
Ages 9 – 12: | Mon 18 Dec: 2 – 5 pm | Construction & Painted Surface Decoration | Kaleidoscope Fun The museum is currently exhibiting the work of seven artists with lens-based practices and whose works combine light, colour and movement to make video installations. The kaleidoscope, which was invented by David Brewster in 1816, brings together these same elements, creating a world of beautiful forms and patterns. Art and science meet in this workshop where children will make a kaleidoscope — a word derived from the Greek phrase meaning ‘to view a beautiful form’ – using a simple cardboard tube. |
Tue 19 Dec: 2 – 5 pm | Decorative Festive Crafts | Silo Silver And Gold This workshop will demonstrate a variety of ways to cut a cardboard tube, creating festive mandala decorations and more, all with an added touch of silver or gold. | |
Wed 20 Dec: 2 – 5 pm | Drawing, Construction & Decoration | Silo Silhouettes Children will discover the magic of miniature stories created inside a cardboard silo. | |
Thu 21 Dec: 2 – 5 pm | Decorative Craft | Silo Xylos Children will experience the enjoyment of making their own xylophones that they can play while accompanying the marimba players who will perform beneath the museum trackshed. |
