In 1983 Dr Mamphela Ramphele was named South African Woman of the Year for her remarkable efforts at Lenyenye, a dreary resettlement area in the Northern Transvaal. Dr Ramphele, a close associate of Black Consciousness leader Steven Biko, had been banished to Lenyenye by the apartheid government. Undeterred, she started a clinic, a day care centre, and a brickyard.
