Thebe Magugu is a contemporary South African fashion brand primarily operating within the field of women’s ready to wear while having a firm footing in accessories and small multidisciplinary projects. Together with our pillar values of quality, novelty and culture, we constantly seek new ways of presenting women with clothing that both comply with and enhances the everyday
Sleek, forward-looking design intersects with motifs from our continent’s storied past, providing smart, multifaceted clothes as valuable as their woman
Magugu gree up in an all-women home where his mother had an almost obsessive love of fashion and his grandmother was a seamstress. His mother is always impeccably dressed, and in his own world, making dresses is a way of wanting to give to other women.
He started drawing stick figure fashion sketches after receiving a black sketch pad from his mother in Grade 3 and has never looked back.
Thebe Magugu Collections are very considered because they come from a deep emotional place and Magugu translates these emotions into functioning garments. His design philosophy is to merge sleek, forward-looking design with motifs from his continent’s storied past, providing smart, multifaceted clothes as precious as the women wearing them.
In 2017 Elle Magazine invited him to submit a proposal to the International Fashion Showcase 2018-19 in London where a panel of industry insiders, buyers and media, chaired by Sarah Mower OBE, selected him as one of 15 emerging international designers to produce a collection. This included a two-week tutoring programme in preparation for the collection to be shown at Somerset House during London Fashion Week in February 2018.
Thebe Magugu is featured in the Zeitz MOCAA exhibition, 21 YEARS: Making Histories with South African Fashion Week (2018 – 2019).
