Lunar by Karen Ter Morshuizen and Dominique Gatland

Lunar is a South African eco-fashion & lifestyle brand that has firmly established itself as one of the country’s top designer labels over the past two decades.

Since its inception, the Lunar label’s distinctive ethos has always been to create clothing that was as natural as possible in both  fabric and design and to use the finest, predominantly natural, fabrics such as pigment-dyed linen, hemp, silk and organic cotton, bamboo and wool as well as the best craftsmanship.

Lunar’s design inspiration is drawn from nature and the African landscape as well as the hand-worked quality of crafting or art. Deeply committed to fair trade and sustainable practice, the business believes decent working conditions for its employees are fundamental to their brand.

Understated and sophisticated styles are meticulously created using only the finest quality natural fibres – fabrics from the earth, with little human interference.

Their Summer Collection 2005-2006 look featured in our 21 YEARS exhibition is inspired by the blooming of Jacarandas that represent the start of high summer. The image of Jacarandas was created from watercolour paintings which were digitised and printed into linen. This collection integrates feminine shapes, capturing the influence of Africa on design with a quiet nod to the Far East.

Lunar was  founded by Karen Ter Morshuizen and Dominique Gatland. Its present-day owner and creative director is Nicola Luther.  She has teamed up with Sonja Stanislaus-Kaw Di-Aping, part of the original ground-breaking and multi-award winning Stoned Cherrie design team, who joins Nicola after spending the past 9 years in New York and Nairobi. Together they are poised to lead the brand, we all know and love, into the future.

Lunar is featured in the Zeitz MOCAA exhibition, 21 YEARS: Making Histories with South African Fashion Week (2018 – 2019).
