#MoloMOCAA: Phumza Ntamo

Sep 3, 2020 | MOCAA Voices

My name is Phumza Ntamo and I am a Ticket Desk Assistant at Zeitz MOCAA.

I started my journey at the museum in 2017 as a Sales Assistant in the shop. Last year, I moved to my spot in the Front of House where I am one of the first faces to greet visitors.

Every day I get to meet people from all over the world and advise them on how best to make their way through our space.

Depending on their expectations and time, I might suggest they make their own way around with an audio device, or recommend they join our free daily tours with one of our gallery guides.

Of course, I always drop a hint that they should stop at the restaurant for a cup of coffee while taking in a view of the harbour, or pop into our shop for memorabilia that will remind them of their visit.

I love my work because I get to work in a space that has incredible history. It’s amazing to think that this modern art museum used to be a grain silo in a completely different era in South Africa.

Another thing I love is that I get to experience first-hand the everchanging art and programming. It makes each day exciting and different and I feel like I always learn something new.

I’m lucky enough to work with our Front of House team who take pride in the visitor experience, and continuously work on ways to improve it.

My favourite artist at the museum is Nandipha Mntambo. If you haven’t experienced her work, Mntambo works in photography, sculpture, video, and mixed media. She’s most well known for her figurative cowhide sculptures that reference the relationship between humans and nature.

I’m excited for when the museum reopens and welcoming home all our wonderful visitors. See you then!
