Date & Time

05 November 17 - 05 November 17

15:00 PM - 16:00 PM

Tour led by:
Julia Kabat (South Africa), SAFIM (South African Friends of the Israel Museum) Assistant Curator of Painting (Zeitz MOCAA).

This tour will explore artists and their works in the opening exhibition that broadly focus on the concept of domesticity. The tour will investigate the ways in which artists, Mary Sibande (South Africa), Ghada Amer (Egypt), Wangechi Mutu (Kenya), Roger Ballen (United States), Lungiswa Gqunta (South Africa), Njideka Akunyili Crosby (Nigeria), Liza Lou (United States) subtly invert or juxtapose symbols referencing the domestic space, as a means of communicating concepts pertaining to violence and displacement. In this process of inversion, the familiar is defamiliarized as a way of challenging tradition or convention.

Please note that this will be a training tour and young curators will join the tour as part of their training.

Meet in the Grand Hall area, near the reception desk.
