Invocations #1 is a 2-day gathering of artists and thinkers within the framework of the research and upcoming exhibition project Indigo Waves and Other Stories, hosted by Zeitz MOCAA. Taking place on 18 and 19 March 2022, the invocations will include a special performative manifestation, JIEKER, by Thania Petersen, in collaboration with The Young Men Sporting Club Malay Choir & Sautur-Rayhaan Nasheed Group will be presented on Friday 18 March 2022 in the Atrium bowl of the museum.
Conceived by Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung and Natasha Ginwala with Michelangelo Corsaro, Indigo Waves and Other Stories is a multi-year, international research and exhibition project, produced and curated in collaboration with numerous institutions, including SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin; Vasl Artists’ Association, Karachi; Frans Hals Museum, Netherlands; Gropius Bau, Berlin and Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town amongst others.
The Indian Ocean is at the center of this project. It seeks to investigate, unpack and shed light on some of the smaller and bigger historical, cultural, and linguistic links between the African and Asian continents with contemporary artists, filmmakers, musicians, writers and Indian Ocean scholars. Invited participants include a multidisciplinary cohort of cultural practitioners of African and Asian descent and include Nobuhle Ashanti, Shiraz Bayjoo, Thuli Gamedze, Atiyyah Khan, Traci Kwaai, Bongani Madondo, Zolitha Magengelele, Nomusa Makhubu, Siyabonga Mthembu, Luvuyo Equiano Nyawose, Thania Petersen, Meghna Singh, Ari Sitas and Ilze Wolff.
