Hosted by Zeitz MOCAA, the Amagama ka Nokutela film is part of a wider South African women collective’s homage to Nokutela Mdima-Dube (1873-1917), a pioneering newspaper and school co-founder, educator, philanthropist, activist, essayist and musician. The film documents the life of Mdima-Dube and the profound ways she has and continues to affect South African women.
The Mdima-Dube-inspired project is independent and aims to celebrate the life and contributions of this amazing woman through multiple avenues of storytelling and dialogue. Early 2022 marks the first phase of this ongoing project, produced by acclaimed women in the field of arts in South Africa. These include former magazine editor and creative consultant Asanda Sizani, television and film producer Busi Sizani and poet Siphokazi Jonas.
