Zeitz MOCAA & UWC Museum Fellowship Programme presents ‘Our People’s Library: Symposium’

Dec 22, 2025

As the 2025 Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) & University of the Western Cape (UWC) Museum Fellowship Programme approaches its conclusion, the cohort invites you to join their final and cumulative public symposium in January 2026.

Our People’s Library: Symposium is a space and platform where the cohort will present their individual research and reflect on their collective interventions, from staff tours, poster making workshops, to a sonic library. These interventions sought to propose alternative readings of the Zeitz MOCAA exhibition, Spring Is Rebellious: The Art & Life of Albie Sachs. During the symposium, the fellows will interweave the thematics of their research within the UWC Historical Studies Department as well as their series of interventions at the museum.

The symposium will highlight how the fellows translated their university seminars, site visits, experiences and research conversations with various artists, curators and other cultural practitioners throughout the year. From UWC, their research surveys the critical bridge between curatorial and educational practices in museums from Ghana and South Africa; material slippage and subjectivity in Diasporic artistic archives; the potential of memory for the social afterlife of museum objects; autoethnography through the development of the queer Ballroom scene across the continent; a meditation on post-liberation literature, artworks, and African archives; and vernacular histories and cartographies of exile between South Africa and Botswana.

Through interactive presentations of their thoughtful interventions and experimental research, the 2025 Zeitz MOCAA & UWC cohort shares what their fellowship year has inspired and proposed for the future of African museology practices. Thank you for all your support and encouragement, we hope to see you in the new year.
