In a series of specialized tours, the Centre for the Moving Image will delve deeper into Penny Siopis’ exhibition This is a True Story: Six Films (1997-2017), a retrospective of twenty years of filmmaking by the artist.
Over the course of a month (21 March 2018 – 11 April 2018), these weekly tours will explore the multi-layered elements of Siopis’ films. The tours will take place every Wednesdays at 3 – 4 pm during this period.
This is a True Story: Psychologically Speaking is the second tour in the series, with Dr Buhle Khanyile exploring the complexity of the psyche in relation to ideas of madness, the physical body and feelings of displacement.
Dr Khanyile questions “how little it takes to suspend ethics,” addressing the politics of individual/crowd in contributing to social experience and impressions of trauma.
About Dr Buhle Khanyile:
Buhle Khanyile is a social psychologist whose research interests are framed by Fanonian humanism. His work oscillates between (a) thinking about how to invent a humane world and, (b) tracing present articulations of colonial/colonising violence. In the latter instance, Buhle is developing and working through the concept of ‘existential violence’ – forms of violence embedded in the architectures of our existence. Currently, Buhle is mainly invested in developing artistic practices (creative essays, poetry and painting) through which he wants to further develop his theoretical experiments on ‘existential violence’.
