Sisonke: A Celebration for the Love of Unity in Diversity

Dec 8, 2017

Zeitz MOCAA will host a commemorative event as part of its year-long Curatorial Lab focus on LGBTQI+ rights in South Africa. This event is held on International Human Rights Day to commemorate the deceased individuals of the LGBTQI+ community in Africa and its Diaspora due to hate crimes and in recognition of universal human rights. It also marks the end of 16-Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign that aims to combat violence against women, including lesbian and transgender individuals.

The purpose of the event will showcase drag queen, contemporary dance, poetry and song performances to celebrate, empower and inspire marginalised queer individuals in Africa and celebrate diverse artistic expression and pride. The Curatorial Lab’s current exhibition of Zanele Muholi’s photographs from the Faces and Phases series affirms the support and encouragement of African queer arts, gender equality and sexual diversity by Zeitz MOCAA.

Sisonke: A Celebration for the Love of Unity in Diversity is a commemorative event organised by Sakhisizwe Gcina, AKO Foundation Assistant Curator of Special Projects at the Curatorial Lab (Zeitz MOCAA). This LGBTQI+ project at Zeitz MOCAA has been developed in partnership with and generously sponsored by the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, under the banner #cocreateSA.
