Our current exhibition, The Main Complaint in the Centre for the Moving Image features a weekly Screen Take-over by invited curators. In a similar vein to Instagram takeovers, a screen in the Centre for the Moving Image will be occupied by invited curators from outside of South Africa (working for institutions, galleries, or independently). Each curator will be invited to take over the screen for a period of one week with content they think needs to be seen in the context of Zeitz MOCAA. This could comprise of video works, text-based interventions, conversations, a single image, sound, etc. It could change daily or remain the same for the entire week.
This week’s takeover Creative Director, Charlotte Langhorst introduces the work of the African Artists’ Foundation in Lagos – an organization which was founded by Zeitz MOCAA’s acting Chief Curator, Azu Nwagbogu.
Established in 2007 in Lagos, Nigeria, African Artists’ Foundation aims to encourage, nurture and promote the development of contemporary art and artists in Africa while crafting stronger collaborative synergies with like-minded organizations around the globe. African Artists’ Foundation serves a significant role in art and academic communities through organizing art exhibitions, festivals, competitions, residencies, and workshops with the aim of unearthing and developing talent, creating societal awareness, and providing a platform to express creativity.
About Charlotte Langhorst:
Charlotte Langhorst, PhD, is the Creative Director of the African Artists’ Foundation in Lagos, a non-profit organisation that promotes contemporary artists in Africa and also serves as an academic hub within the region. She is one of the curators of LagosPhoto Festival 2018. LagosPhoto Festival is the first and only international arts festival of photography in Nigeria. Whilst being based in Africa for more than seven years, she held the position of a research assistant at the University of Ghana, worked as a visiting lecturer at the Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development in Cairo, Egypt and as an affiliated researcher at the University of Lagos in Nigeria.
