Are you in Grade 10 or 11 and curious about the world of contemporary art? Want to meet like-minded creatives, experiment with new ideas, and be part of something bigger? Then the MOCAA Art Club might be exactly what you’re looking for.
Run by the BMW Centre for Art Education, this annual programme brings together a select group of 15 learners from across Cape Town for three months of creative exploration, collaboration, and real-world art experience. This isn’t your typical art club. It’s a space to explore, experiment, and push your creativity further.
The programme kicks off with a relaxed meet-and-greet where you’ll connect with fellow participants, facilitators, and parents before diving into the journey ahead. From August to October, we will meet every Saturday for 14 weeks of hands-on workshops, discussions, and collaborative making.
The 2026 cohort will explore the exhibition We Proceed in the Footsteps of the Sunlight by German-Ghanaian artist Zohra Opoku. This powerful exhibition explores memory and identity through forgotten family histories and storytelling while unpacking themes of healing and self-discovery through art. Expect to engage with bold, texture-rich artworks that combine photography, printmaking, embroidery, sculpture, and collage—all pushing the boundaries of what art can look and feel like.
The workshops take place at the BMW Centre for Art Education at Zeitz MOCAA, where the classroom becomes your creative lab. You’ll experiment with different materials and techniques, take part in supportive group critique sessions, develop your own unique artistic voice and collaborate and learn from other young creatives.
Your journey will culminate in the MOCAA Art Club group exhibition at Zeitz MOCAA, where your work will be professionally showcased. There will be an official opening event where your friends and family can celebrate your achievement—your art in Africa’s leading contemporary art museum.
This workshop is completely free of charge. All materials will be provided (within reason).
