The Imbali Artbooks: Adventuring Into Art introduces young people to the world of art, through looking at many different South African artists and their work from the first artists in South Africa to young contemporary artists working today.
Join us for the book launch of the book titled, Imbali Artbooks: Adventuring into Art in the Sheryn Collection Arena on Saturday, 13 April 2019. The programme will include inputs from the author, Ruth Sack; the Director of Imbali Visual Literacy Project, Justine Waterson and; Chairperson of the Zeitz MOCAA Education Advisory Committee, Suzanne Ackerman. These presentations will be followed by a public conversation between artists Penny Siopis and Sethembile Msezani, both featured in the book. The artists’ conversation will be facilitated by Julia Overmeyer, Grade 12 student from the Peter Clarke Art Centre.
The Imbali Artbooks consists of a boxed set of eight books. The series is structured around themes, topics, issues and ideas that are engaging and relevant to young people in the 21stcentury. This series has been designed primarily to be used in the classroom for students between 11 and 15 years of age – corresponding to the Senior Phase in SA Schools and Middle School in other countries. The series is also versatile and can be used in numerous other contexts, at home, in museums and galleries and by adults wanting to learn more about art.
The Imbali Visual Literacy Project is an accredited craft and design training organisation that trains talented and creative youth and women from disadvantaged backgrounds to become craft entrepreneurs. They also train art teachers and develop resources for arts education. The project was launched 29 years ago and is based in Newtown (Johannesburg, Gauteng). They work all over Gauteng and in a number of other provinces in South Africa.
The book will be on sale at the launch at the retail price of R1500.00. With every book that is sold, the Imbali Literacy Project is able to provide the book to a deserving under-resourced school.
