Inspired by Nicholas Hlobo’s artwork, ‘iimpundulu zonke ziyandilandela’ currently showing in the Two Together exhibition, the Fantastical Creatures Family Learning Workshop offers parents and children the opportunity to play, explore and develop their engagement with art together.
An impundulu is a lightning bird from isiXhosa and isiZulu origin stories. It is said to create a bright flash when it lays its eggs during a thunderstorm. It is believed that if you can catch one and boil it, then spread its fat at the entrance of your home, your house and your family will be protected from lightening.
The parent/ guardian-children teams will use their imaginations to think up and create their own fantastical creatures. They will first design their creature using collage, before making them in 3D using the materials provided.
The Family Learning Workshops enable adults and children to share a creative experience, work collaboratively and learn together.
Children age 4 – 9 and their parents/ guardians. Age concessions for siblings. Open to museum members and non-members. Not a member?
