Family Learning Workshop: Egungun

Oct 20, 2021

The Egungun Family Learning Workshop is inspired by the work of artist Leoncé Raphael Agbodélou, as found in Zeitz MOCAA’s Two Together exhibition. Egungun is a masked, costumed figure from the Yoruba of Nigeria. The costumes are made to honour ancestors and appease dead spirits, and are traditionally worn at parades and funerals. The celebration of Halloween will be used as an entry point to help children understand and develop an appreciation of this African tradition.

The workshop will offer children and their guardians an opportunity to explore and develop their connections with creativity through the act of designing costumes that celebrate their ancestors.

The workshop will be facilitated by Amy Cornfield at the museum’s Centre for Art Education on Level -1.
