Can the realism of Jeremiah Quarshie, the naturalism of Kehinde Wiley, the abstraction of Chris Ofili, the expressionism of Misheck Masamvu, and the surrealism of Cheri Samba be a form of resistance towards the ownership of a predominant Western narrative of painting?” – Xola Mlwandle

Julia Kabat, the SAFIM Assistant Curator of Painting and Xola Mlwandle, the Wendy Fisher Assistant Curator of Painting will discuss and analyse the paintings in All Things Being Equal Part 3. This is an exhibition that represents the diverse stylistic approaches of painters across Africa and its Diaspora today. These modes of painting demonstrate how stylistic choices facilitate a multitude of conversations taking place around social and economic inequalities, issues of spirituality, remembrance and representation.

Kabat and Mlwandle will consider the stylistic categories used by artists in the 20^th century and begin a comparative dialogue of how artists in Africa contribute towards this conversation around the dominant Western canon of Art History.

Inside the Waterfront

From the Clock Tower, it’s a 3–5-minute walk to the Silo District. From Battery Park, 5-7 minutes along the canal. Look for the concrete silo with the glass rooftop – that’s Zeitz MOCAA.

From the Freeway

Follow signs to V&A Waterfront via the N1/N2. Enter Dock Road to the Silo District. Zeitz MOCAA is the historic grain silo on Silo Square. Parking: Silo 1 or 2 or at Battery Park.

From the Suburbs

From M3/M5, head to the V&A Waterfront. Enter via Dock Road and continue to the silo District. Find us on Silo Square in the grain silo building. Parking nearby at Silo District or Battery Park.

Secure parking is available at the V&A Waterfront Silo District Parking Garage (P3). Direct access to the museum is available from the garage.
