Are you in Grade 12 this year? Are you a Visual Art student eager to push the boundaries of what it means to be an artist and a creative? Then this workshop is the perfect opportunity for you!
The Zeitz MOCAA Matric Workshop is run every year by the BMW Centre for Art Education where a select group of learners are brought together from different schools, for three months of collective learning and experimentation, culminating in a group exhibition of your artwork at Zeitz MOCAA. This will be the fifth year of the Workshop, where you will become part of a community of young creative adults, working together to expand your understanding of the art world.
The programme starts with four jam-packed days of workshops and activities over the March and April school holidays, followed by working Saturdays, where you will have access to the BMW Centre for Art Education as a working space. You will be introduced to group critique sessions, in a supportive environment with your facilitators, where you will produce your artwork and artist statement. Finally, your work will be exhibited in an exclusive exhibition at Zeitz MOCAA, with an official opening where friends and family can join to celebrate your achievement! In addition, your artwork and artist statement will be featured in a full-colour catalogue, and the entire process of the workshop will be captured in an exciting 30-minute documentary.
Each Matric Workshop unpacks one of the exhibitions at Zeitz MOCAA and this year will focus on A Protea Is Not a Flower, an intergenerational exhibition focusing on two contemporary artists, Lerato Shadi and Robin Rhode, alongside the Modernists Gerard Sekoto, Bessie Head, and Don Mattera. This exhibition explores themes of exile, displacement, and identity, questioning how connection and isolation resonate with artists across multiple generations, countries and continents.
This workshop is offered completely FREE OF CHARGE to all participating learners. All materials (within reason) will be provided for the production of your artwork as well as materials for the activities in the workshop. The only requirement is to be able to get to and from Zeitz MOCAA on your own, if possible.
