Since the 1930s, the white male has played the lead role in superhero fiction. By appropriating and transforming familiar comic book language, Kumasi Barnett challenges the typecast role of the black body in these popular narratives. By making the Amazing Black-Man the hero of the story, he questions stereotypes and prejudices.
Today, Marvel’s Black Panther offers a ground-breaking celebration of black cultures and draws attention to issues of representation in mainstream public discourse.
