Zeitz MOCAA Atelier Artist Residency Programme

The Zeitz MOCAA Atelier Artist Residency Programme is an experimental, public-facing studio on Level 2 of the museum, spanning 400 square metres of multi-gallery space. Designed for Cape Town–based artists, the Atelier offers a rare opportunity to work continuously in a formal studio environment while remaining open to visitors, giving museum audiences direct insight into artistic processes and modes of production.

Established in 2019 by the late Executive Director and Chief Curator Koyo Kouoh, the programme reflects her belief that artists must be given conceptual, intellectual, and material space to think, experiment, and create. Over residencies of up to eight months, artists engage meaningfully with diverse publics in a setting built on trust, curiosity, and the conviction that the museum should be a platform for both emerging and established voices. Previous residents include Kemang Wa Lehulere, Thania Petersen, Haroon Gunn-Salie, Igshaan Adams, Unathi Mkonto, and Berni Searle.

The next Atelier artist will be announced during the course of 2026. Currently, the Atelier serves as an exhibition space with Spring Is Rebellious: The Art & Life of Albie Sachs on view until Sunday, 23 August 2023.

Zeitz MOCAA’s curatorial and exhibition programming is generously supported the Mellon Foundation and BMW South Africa.
