Africa Day at Zeitz MOCAA

Join us on Saturday, 25 May 2019, as we celebrate our heritage on Africa Day. The day will be filled with special performances by some of Cape Town’s best school choirs, artists, and musicians.

There will also be a 10% discount on memberships and our restaurant will serve  an Africa Day special menu at a discounted rate. Children under 18 enjoy free admission all day.

Programming:

10:15 – 11 a.m.
Linge Primary School Choir (Nyanga): A choral performance in the BMW Atrium.

11:15 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Chris Hani High School Choir (Khayelitsha):  A choral performance in the BMW Atrium.

12:30 – 1:30 p.m.
Africa Day Children’s Storytelling with Pedro, the Music Man:  A storytelling session for children of all ages Pedro, the music man will unlock the magic of African stories through word and song –  introducing the joy and beauty of traditional African instruments as an integral part of his storytelling technique.

2:30 – 3 p.m.
Hout Bay Ingoma Choir Performance in the BMW Atrium.

3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Musical Performance by Azah: A  special musical intervention in the BMW Atrium.

About Linge Primary School Choir:
Linge Primary School is a public combines school based in Nyanga. The school is located near and often collaborates with the Nyanga Arts Development Centre, which promotes and encourage Individual Artists, Crafters, and cultural groups to establish cooperatives and promotes heritage and tourism. The school is also associated with the Nyanga Arts Initiative (NAI) that is intending to contribute to arts development, skills development and enterprise development in the Nyanga community and surrounding areas. It is for the community – including young, old, illiterate and disabled people – to explore and develop their talent, especially in the arts sector in a commercially viable and sustainable way.

About Chris Hani High School Choir:
Chris Hani Secondary School, situated in Khayelitsha, specialises in dance, arts and culture. The Chris Hani School Choir is at the heart of the school’s arts and cultural activities. Its performances combine choral music, dance and choreography, drama and poetry, backed by musical instrumentation. The choir has performed at some of the country’s most prestigious events, such as the Opening of Parliament in Cape Town. It also participated in the National Schools Choir Competitions (SASCE) and the High School Jam Festival (2013). In 2013, 2014 and 2015, the Choir won the Western Cape Provincial (SASCE) Championships. On the international stage, the choir was given an honorary invitation to perform at the International Conference for UNiGlobal Unions at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in 2014.

About Petro, the Music Man:
Pedro Espi-Sanchis, affectionately known as Pedro, the Music Man is one of South Africa’s most well known and loved story-tellers. He has thrilled and delighted audiences of children and parents alike through his unique storytelling technique.Pedro was born in Spain, grew up in France and now resides in Cape Town. He has worked as a musician, performer, composer, educator and story-teller in South Africa and abroad for over 30 years and has been a leading figure in music education in South Africa instilling a love and appreciation for music in children and teachers alike.

About Hout Bay Ingoma Choir:

The Hout Bay Ingoma Choir is a South African township choir based near Cape Town, sharing the joy of song with a mix of traditional, gospel and Western.  The small professional group of singers specialising in isiXhosa and English choral work. The group is  passionate about music and the African choral tradition and focus on music and song as a route to personal and community upliftment.

About Azah:
Tinyiko Mpho Mphago wa Mabasa also professionally known as Azah is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, musical director cultural activist, educator and philanthropist from the South African Jazz capital Mamelodi in Pretoria. He is a brilliant, versatile and multitalented musician and is known as one of the finest South African percussionists of our generation – and for good reason. Born into a family of traditional healers, he began playing the drums at the age of 8 and formed a decidedly passionate bond with drums and percussion as not only healing instruments but also as a way of artistic and spiritual expression.

Daily Tours

Free daily 1-hour tours are offered Monday through Friday at 12:30 PM. Book on arrival at the museum with our Front of House team. Capacity is limited.

Inside the Waterfront

From the Clock Tower, it’s a 3–5-minute walk to the Silo District. From Battery Park, 5-7 minutes along the canal. Look for the concrete silo with the glass rooftop – that’s Zeitz MOCAA.

From the Freeway

Follow signs to V&A Waterfront via the N1/N2. Enter Dock Road to the Silo District. Zeitz MOCAA is the historic grain silo on Silo Square. Parking: Silo 1 or 2 or at Battery Park.

From the Suburbs

From M3/M5, head to the V&A Waterfront. Enter via Dock Road and continue to the silo District. Find us on Silo Square in the grain silo building. Parking nearby at Silo District or Battery Park.

Parking

Secure parking is available at the V&A Waterfront Silo District Parking Garage (P3). Direct access to the museum is available from the garage.
