Re-looking: Exhibition Design in Practice

May 25, 2026

This series of specialised tours offers visitors an opportunity to look again at the exhibition through the lens of exhibition design. While curatorial tours often focus on artists, artworks, and thematic narratives, these talks reveal the spatial and visual decisions that shape how an exhibition is experienced.

Led by the Exhibition Manager, Julia Flowers, these sessions explore how curatorial concepts are translated into physical form through layout, materials, lighting, colour, and display strategies. Visitors will gain insight into the often-unseen process of transforming curatorial ideas into spatial environments that guide movement, focus attention, and influence interpretation.

By unpacking the design decisions behind the exhibition, the talks invite audiences to reconsider elements they may have previously overlooked—from the placement of a work on a wall to the subtle ways architecture, colour, and display structures frame the viewing experience.

The programme encourages a slower, more attentive engagement with select exhibitions, offering visitors a chance to re-look at the visual language of the gallery and the design choices that shape how art is encountered.

The first tour in this series will focus on two exhibitions, Spring Is Rebellious: The Art & Life of Albie Sachs and Zohra Opoku’s We Proceed in the Footsteps of the Sunlight.
