Date & Time

21 January 23 - 21 January 23

13:00 PM - 18:00 PM

To mark the completion of the inaugural Zeitz MOCAA & University of the Western Cape (UWC) Museum Fellowship Programme, participating fellows Rory Tsapayi, MIREMBE, Motlalepula Phukubje and Monique du Plessis have conceived and organised a culminating symposium. Following Christina Sharpe’s theorisation of “trans*” as a form and space that is open for trans*gressive thinking against the grain, the gathering trans*missions is a presentation of different but interrelated research projects that speak to the trans*generational, trans*geographic, and ultimately trans*formational exchanges of the past year.

Taking the landmark exhibition When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting as a launching point and emphasising practice-based research from a variety of departments in the museum, these projects offer a moment to reflect on the lessons of the year while projecting what is to come. Closely considering curatorial ethics, exhibition-making strategies, museum architectures, artistic practices, and professional reciprocity the mix of topics speaks to the different goals and interests of the fellows, offering an optimistic forecast of cultural, institutional, and intellectual life in Africa and beyond.
