Ellen Kondowe was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Currently, Kondowe is the Assistant Registrar at Zeitz MOCAA (Cape Town, South Africa). Kondowe graduated from the Curatorial Training Programme at the Centre for Curatorial Excellence at Zeitz MOCAA with a scholarship from the AKO Foundation.
At Zeitz MOCAA, Kondowe works with the Registrar, to ensure that all objects in Zeitz MOCAA’s Permanent Collection and collections and objects on loan to the museum are handled, stored, transported and exhibited in an environment and manner conducive to the preservation of art. She oversees the installation and de-installation of all exhibitions in the museum and continues the development of a digital database that provides clear and effective information for all museum staff.
In 2017, Kondowe was a featured participant at the inaugural Culture Summit 2017 hosted by the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority in conjunction with the FP Group and TCP Ventures, LLC in Abu Dhabi. The same year, Kondowe was awarded a scholarship by Goodman Gallery to attend Rose Shakinovsky’s Modern and Contemporary Art Survey Course (Johannesburg, South Africa). From 2015 to 2016, Kondowe worked as Head of Communications for the Invisible Borders Trans-African Photographers Organisation (Lagos, Nigeria). In 2015, Kondowe completed a three-month internship, focusing on e-commerce and logistics, with fashion company KISUA (Johannesburg, South Africa). In 2014, Kondowe completed a design internship with Suzaan Heyns Studio (Johannesburg, South Africa). The same year, Kondowe was also shortlisted for African Fashion International’s Fastrack programme (Johannesburg, South Africa), which grooms emerging design talent within the African fashion industry and exposes them to global audiences. Kondowe’s graduate clothing collection entitled, Midas, Africa and I, was showcased, as a part of the Fastrack programme, at the Mercedes -Benz Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2014 (Johannesburg, South Africa).
Kondowe holds a Diploma in Fashion from the Spero Villioti Elite Design Academy, (Johannesburg, South Africa) which she earned in 2013. In 2012 and 2013, she completed the NYC Summer Program at Parsons the New School for Design (New York, USA) run in partnership with the Spero Villioti Elite Design Academy.
